New Spaces For Music returns for Autumn/Winter with a double
bill from two of the most exciting new female voices in Irish
music.
Katie Kim’s music has been alternately described as perfect swellings, sedated, distorted chaos and sculpted slow burns; words which only go some way to describing the music that bleeds from Katie Kim. Formerly a member of the Galaxy 500-esque, dreampop outfit Dae-Kim she left the band in early 2008 to start recording the songs she had been writing over the past 5 years, until a computer mishap wiped over 50 of her finished works. A collection of new songs, born from the mourning of this loss, butterflied into Twelve; her critically acclaimed debut album.
Twelve has generated an overwhelming response, with many calling it the great hidden albums of 2008. Initially released on limited edition vinyl it was re-released on CD in early 2009 and has quickly fallen into the favourite lists of anyone that owns a copy.
"One of my favourite Irish albums of the season comes from Waterford lass Katie Kim. "Twelve" is a slow-burner, all weird turns and fuzzy twists. Live, Katie and her two hooded co-players get tougher and grittier in a Mazzy Star rocking out with Cat Power kind of way” - The Irish Times
Playing with a full band, this will be one of her few live performances this year. |

Katie will be joined for her Sligo
performance with another debut act- Valerie Francis. Having served her apprenticeship on the Dublin singer-songwriter circuit lending her gorgeous vocals to a host of Irish acts, Valerie finally steps into the spotlight with a stunning debut in Slow Dynamo. Released in May it was co-produced by Francis with Jape and David Kitt man Jimmy Eadie.
“A heady concoction of blurred sounds act like fireflies in a jar at night, all subtly taking turns to move the fore, twinkling alongside harmonies that make you want to sigh and close your eyes. There’s plenty of music to soothe any savage beast here, the album’s atmosphere is a mesmerising lull that’s both appealingly uncomplicated and touching in its frankness” - State
The album’s lead single, Punches, was accompanied by a stunning video by Eoghan Kidney and got a heads up on Kanye West’s blog, leading to over 300,000 views
